U.N. Agencies Warn of Rising Rates of Famine in War-Torn Yemen
The United Nations warns acute cases of hunger in Yemen have reached an unprecedented level, with over 160,000 people likely to experience famine over the second half of this year.
The U.N. says more than 17 million people in Yemen are currently in need of food assistance, with persistent high levels of acute malnutrition among children under the age of 5.
The stark warning came ahead of a donor’s conference on Yemen planned for Wednesday. Yemen is suffering the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, seven years after the Saudi-led coalition launched its war and blockade of Yemen backed by arms sales and technical assistance from the United States and allies including France and the United Kingdom.
