In Denmark last month a Muslim woman was fined $200/- for wearing a full veil. In Australia a Muslim woman MoutiaElzahedin full burka was fined $1100/- when she refused to stand for a judge. The 50-year-old Muslima then gave the ISIS terrorist organization’s one-finger salute outside Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court while her friend called journalists “cockroaches”. Failing to pay the fine she was instructed to perform the community service.
In the UK former mayor of London, Boris Johnson while disagreeing with Burka ban in Denmark, remarked: He did not want the full-face veil and gown donned by some Muslim women to be banned in Britain but the outfit was “ridiculous” and “weird”. He also said it made its wearers look like “letter boxes” or “bank robbers”and “rebellious teenagers”. Johnson refused to apologize for his statement, despite demands from PM Theresa May, who said the remarks have “clearly caused offence.” Surely he needs diversity training.
Mr. Bean – British comedian Rowan Atkinson, who famously played Mr. Bean, has given his verdict on the comments made by Johnson in a letter to The Times.”As a lifelong beneficiary of the freedom to make jokes about religion, I do think that Boris Johnson’s joke about wearers of the burka resembling letterboxes is a pretty good one,” said the Blackadder and Mr. Bean actor. He added, “All jokes about religion cause offence, so it’s pointless apologizing for them. You should really only apologize for a bad joke. On that basis, no apology is required.”
Baroness SayeedaWarsi described the remarks as “offensive and deliberately provocative, but very clever politics”. Dr.Qanta Ahmed, a British-American Muslim doctor who supports banning face veils, said Mr. Johnson had been “tactless”.The 50-year-old said wearing a full-face veil was a “new phenomenon” and she didn’t consider it a religious right, adding that she would be “very opposed” to it becoming normalized in British society.
It is reported that in Blankburn, Lancashire, (UK) a Shell gas station forced motorcyclist Liam Bradly, to remove his open face helmet while a lady in burka filled up petrol in her car next to him.
It appears that burka is right now a burning issue in many erstwhile predominantly white countries. Why is that? Burka has been around for thousands of years, it has been worn in the Muslim world by millions of women without any fuss. It became a problem when Muslim women immigrated to European countries and decided to don a burka according to the dictates of their religion or of their own free will. This has been bothersome to some especially when burka is worn by new white converts to Islam.
The Glorious Quran enjoins all Muslims – whether male or female – to dress modestly. Beyond this the holy book offers no guidance for female clothing, there is no mention of the burka, or hundreds of other varieties of this dress, including the hijab or veil. In any event it should be woman’s choice what to wear or what not to. A piece of clothing should not be such a controversial thing. Is it really a national threat that laws are made being for banning it, one wonders.
